Hurricane Barry

In collaboration with utility industry partners, Disaster Tech gathered historical data from Hurricane Barry, which made landfall in Louisiana as a Category 1 hurricane in July 2019 and used it to create a predictive model of where power outages were most likely to occur at the parish level.

The predictive model used data from the three days preceding the hurricane, the day of landfall, and three days after. In observing the data's visualizations, it is evident that the modeling predicted the power outages with a high level of accuracy. Having these predictive capabilities is immensely important in preparedness efforts; that extra 72 hours can be the difference between life and death.

Disaster Tech also streamed live traffic data into the model and available housing to facilitate the most effective routes for technicians and work crews to get to the out-of-order sites.
